Overview
JOB SUMMARY:
The Human Resource Generalist is responsible for managing all aspects of the hiring and onboarding process, maintaining positive employee relations, managing our benefits package, and providing support for positive issue resolution. This position will serve as a resource to GMSS employees by promptly responding to staff questions and concerns and ensuring human resource documentation, information, and policies are kept up-to-date and easily accessible.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (Majority of duties, but not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned as necessary.)
Recruitment & Onboarding:
- Manage all aspects of the hiring process, including recruitment, orientation, and onboarding including running GMSS background checks.
- Initiate and manage recruitment efforts such as career fairs, online recruiting, mailings, and creating and distributing recruitment flyers.
- Run background checks on all active employees every other year.
- Handle employment-related inquiries from applicants, employees, and supervisors, referring complex and/or sensitive matters to the appropriate staff.
Payroll & Benefits administration:
- Administer benefits plan, assist new hires with benefits enrollment, and provide support for employees with any questions regarding the benefits plan (MVP-VT, HSA, FSA, etc.)
- Administer compensation via GMSS’ HR Information System (HRIS), UKG
- Liaise with ARIS Solutions to conduct employee onboarding via BambooHR and UKG
Training and development:
- Ensure employees have documented retention and development plan updates at least annually
- Serve as Relias site administrator and assign, monitor, and audit course completions
Compliance
- Ensure HR documentation, including the GMSS employee handbook and policies and orientation materials are kept up-to-date and easily accessible.
- Promote HR programs to create an efficient and conflict-free workplace, including but not limited to compensation, benefits and leave, disciplinary matters, disputes and investigations, performance and talent management, productivity, recognition and morale, occupational health and safety, and training and development.
- Maintain employee files and records.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance.
Culture & HR Best Practices:
- Co-facilitate GMSS’ Employee Representative Committee, including meetings and agenda.
- Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in HR, talent management, and employment law.
- Provide support to employees and supervisors in various HR-related topics such as leaves, compensation and performance issues.
- Gather, analyze and report on HR metrics, such as time to hire and employee turnover rates.
Regularly meet with ARIS’ HR director for collaboration and support
Other Functions:

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE: (Minimum education, experience, technical and communication skill levels required to perform the essential functions of this position.)
- Minimum Bachelor’s degree (preferred) in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
- 3-5 years of proven human resources generalist experience
- HR designation, such as SHRM-CP or PHR preferred
- Solid knowledge of HR principles, practices, and employment/labor laws
- Outstanding knowledge of MS Office; HRIS systems (UKG, BambooHR preferred)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Ability to work both independently and as a team with a results-driven approach, with employees at all levels of the organization

- Additional HR training will be a plus
